Stronger Than Magic

Stronger than Magic by Melinda VanLone
 Dolphin Throne Series #1
Stronger Than Magic
3 stars

Tarian Xannon fights demons, like the rest of us. This time, the demon just happens to be real.

When Tarian tracks down a petty magical criminal in Philadelphia as a favor for a friend, she ends up fighting with a demon instead. He steals some of her blood during the struggle, which doesn’t seem like a big deal until she learns that he can use it to siphon away her power and subject her to his will. She’ll be nothing more than a puppet in less than a week unless she can find a way to stop him.

This is bad news for her and for the family throne, a magical object she didn’t want to inherit, but now feels pressured to protect. Nothing could stop the demon from killing anyone in his path once he has the throne’s power.

I got this book as part of  a Reading Addiction Tour and honestly I didn't know what to expect. I normally pick books up off the best-sellers table, so this was a new experience for me, and one I will continue.
The story follows Tarian, who is a tracker. She tracks people with her magical abilities, but never expects someone to have a plan for her own. On a mission she is attacked by a demon-lizard-man  who takes her blood. All things go downhill from there as Tarian has to track and defeat the demon before her time is up.
This book was full of action and very well written, but there were some slow parts that made me easily distracted. Although it did not instantaneously pull me in, I'm glad I got to read it. Tarian is a good role model, as she is a strong, independent woman, who doesn't think things should always go by tradition.
I give "Stronger Than Magic" 3 stars because, like my rating policy says, I really liked it, I recommend it, but I'm not sure if I would re-read it.
