City of Ashes

City of Ashes: Book Two of the Mortal Instruments Trilogy by Cassandra Clare
3 out of 5 stars
Quick Overview:
Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what's normal when you're a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who's becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

What I Thought:
This book was okay. City of Bones was good, but when I expected City of Ashes to be even better, it missed it's mark.
I also noticed that it would sometimes get slow. Really slow. I would read, and then lose interest and find something else to do.
To me, the love triangle thing is getting boring. Because, seriously, every single book has the same lead girl who loves one guy but then there's another guy who she has known forever and then she doesn't know if the first guy loves her or not and then we go through some battles and stuff and then the book ends and everyone chooses if they are Team ______ or Team ______.

Just to wrap everything up, this book wasn't bad. I have a few friends who read it and loved it and talk about Clary and Jace and Simon every time we get together. But they also said that the book did have slow parts through out it.

  1. Great Review. I felt like you, that it would pick up, then slow down. It took me forever to finish!

  3. I have to agree that the book was a tad slow at times but I still thought it was absolutely fabulous. I didn't care for the first one much but unlike 'ShadyLane' I thought the books got better as they went along.

    1. I agree that they got better, too. The 4th and 5th were my personal favorites!
